Are You Afraid of Cholesterol?

Since we are living in a fast paced world, many of us tend to neglect the significance of taking good care of our health. As we age, our body needs the urgency for medical check up. Whenever any of us see the word “CHOLESTEROL” in the report, we are inclined to think that it is something bad to our body. To tell the truth, cholesterol is not necessarily bad for our body because there are two types of cholesterol; namely good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. Typically, cholesterol is a fat formed by the liver and is fundamental for usual body operation. It exists in the external coat of each cell in our body and has numerous functions. These functions aid the regular function of our body.

Before one starts to be afraid of cholesterol, it is better to learn the significance of good cholesterol to our body. Firstly, cholesterol builds and maintains cell membranes which are the outer layer of each cell. These cell membranes have permeability which is essential for determining which molecules can pass into the cell and which cannot. This helps to eliminate unwanted molecules from entering the cells. Moreover, cholesterol aids in the production of bile. We have read in books that sunshine provides Vitamin D to our body but has anyone wondered how is it possible for the sunshine to convert to Vitamin D? Well, with the aid of cholesterol, it is possible because it converts sunshine to vitamin D. Furthermore, it is also imperative for the body to enhance metabolism of fat soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K. With all these functions in hand, there isn’t any necessity to be afraid of cholesterol unless you have LDL.
Now you may ask what LDL is. LDL is the acronym for low density lipoprotein. People often refer to it as bad cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to cells. If too much is carried, too much for the cells to use, there can be a harmful buildup of LDL. This can increase the risk of arterial disease if levels rise too high. Most human blood contains approximately 70% LDL but this may vary, depending on the person. Too much LDL can cause the arteries to become blocked, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Blocked arteries occur when excess LDL and other fatty substances attach themselves to the walls of the arteries, causing them to become narrower, meaning that blood cannot pass through as easily. Over time, partially blocked arteries also become hardened and inflamed, increasing the risk of breakage. All this increases the risk of a range of vascular diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. When there is bad cholesterol, the good comes along. HDL (high density lipoprotein) is often referred to as good cholesterol. Experts say HDL prevents arterial disease. Moreover, HDL does the opposite of LDL. It takes the cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver. In the liver it is either broken down or expelled from the body as waste.

In addition, high cholesterol itself doesn't cause any symptoms. This means that we could have high cholesterol and not know about it. The only way to know our cholesterol level is to have it tested. Once receiving the results, it is not necessarily something devastating because level of bad cholesterol in body can be reduced or controlled if we follow a balanced diet, live a healthy lifestyle and obviously by following the instructions from doctors. High cholesterol level becomes deadly only when we refuse to change our habits that contributes to the increase in cholesterol in our body.
In a nutshell, living a healthy lifestyle is everyone’s dream. Daydreaming about it but living an unhealthy lifestyle, for example, smoking, eating food which is high in cholesterol and not exercising regularly will never help in avoiding ourselves from getting high cholesterol. Cholesterol is not something to be afraid of because as stated above good cholesterol does play a vital role in our body. It is our responsibility to restrict the increase in bad cholesterol in our body. Prevention is always better than cure. Therefore, start preventing from getting high bad cholesterol since a very young age instead of trying to reduce it after getting affected. We only live once.

Why waste it by being afraid of something that we can restrain?

Bypass Burgers: Eat Unto Death

I am sure most of you like burgers, rather LOVVVVVE burgers. Would you want to try triple bypass burger? It is available at Heart Attack Grill @ Las Vegas, Nevada. I stumbled upon this last week while researching for mutations related to cardiovascular disease.

Menu offered at Heart Attack Grill:
Single bypass burger, double bypass burger, triple bypass burger and much more.

Funny name right? Find out more what happens if you eat them regularly.

When you pass by a KFC or McDonald's joint, don’t you crave for a big, juicy hamburger, but thank your stars that you are in Malaysia, not USA, where you get a small sized burger and not like the one shown above. Contents inside the burgers can lead to an increased risk for heart disease if you have too many of them. Two main risk factors for heart disease are cholesterol and high blood pressure.

The saturated fat and cholesterol in hamburgers can raise your blood cholesterol levels, which can increase your risk for heart disease. Ground beef has about 21 g total fat and 8 g saturated fat per 3-ounce serving.

High sodium intake is another risk factor leading to high blood pressure, and a hamburger loaded with cheese and condiments is very high sodium laden.

Coronary artery bypass surgery is a surgery performed to relieve angina(pain in the chest) caused due to blockage in arteries and reduce the risk of death . Arteries or veins from elsewhere in the patient's body are grafted to the coronary arteries to bypass the narrowed passages and improve the blood supply to the heart muscle. This surgery is usually performed with the heart stopped, often called off-pump" surgery. It requires a heart-lung bypass machine to circulate the blood and add oxygen. Bypass surgery is usually performed only when other treatments, such as medicine and angioplasty are not useful because of the location or extent of the blockage.

Number of bypasses

The terms single bypass, double bypass, triple bypass, quadruple bypass and quintuple bypass refer to the number of coronary arteries bypassed in the procedure.

a double bypass means two coronary arteries are bypassed (e.g. the left anterior descending coronary artery and right coronary artery.
a triple bypass means three vessels are bypassed
a quadruple bypass means four vessels are bypassed (e.g. LAD, RCA, LCX, first diagonal artery of the LAD) and
quintuple means five. Bypass of more than four coronary arteries is uncommon.

Advice to all:

Eat burgers only occasionally. Share a burger with your friend.
Eat more vegetables with it.
Control your craving for French fries.
Inculcate the habit of eating more vegetables and not burgers, in young children.

What if My Engine Seizes…My Heart Stops?

I am a software engineer and I see my heart as an engineering marvel, a medical device with complex hardware components & an embedded software system.

Heart is the ‘motor pump’ which works tirelessly every day, every minute nay every second, for the entire duration of our lives, day after day, month after month, year after year. It does not ask for a break on weekends, casual leaves, and vacation. In fact even if our heart misses a single beat, we feel scared & think as to what happened.

Heart has  the most  efficient motor pump working relentlessly to keep our lives going on, to maintain the circulation incessant all our lives. The pacemaker and the nerves are similar to the ‘switch and the electrical wiring system’ of a medical device. Any disturbances or short circuit will cause rhythm upset ‘misfiring engine’ or cardiac arrest that is ‘engine seize’ making the machine to stop working.

Heart’s fuel supply is by the coronary arteries, this is similar to the multi-point-fuel injection of cars that keeps the engine running. Any partial blockage makes the engine to strain & get damaged, while complete blockage may switch off the pistons & the pump stops working.

The blood flow direction is maintained by ‘heart valves’ which work like non-return valves of an engine. They could get tight or loose due to infections/ heart disease that’s like the valves getting spoiled which may need replacement.

In software engineering we do ‘code reviews’ diligently so that the software doesn’t throw errors, this leads us to & ensures that timely action can be taken & preventive maintenance of the server can be done to keep the application running. The same can be done by us undergoing genetic/molecular testing to understand our DNA codes of the heart. Necessary life style changes; reduce weight, cut down salt, moderate fat intake, relaxation techniques have to be adopted so that we are proactive in our heart matters and not reactive implying, to take action only when we get hospitalized. These days’ young individuals even below the age of 30’s, are suffering from heart diseases and few very unfortunate ones are succumbing to sudden deaths at work places, at home, on the sports field.

We need to keep our hearts in a healthy state for it to keep pumping efficiently & effectively. We are so punctual with our car servicing schedule but we never bother about our Heart’s servicing and maintenance. We don’t take adequate preventive measures to ease its burden. The following are few of the preventive maintenance I can think of:

We need to keep our weights in check so that
o there is no ‘engine overload’.
We need to keep our cholesterol in acceptable levels so that
o our fuel supply system is not choked.
We need to keep our blood pressure normal, eat less salt so that
o ‘resistance’ of the system is optimal.
We need to keep our lungs healthy, avoid smoking, do aerobic exercise so that
o ‘air filters’ don’t get blocked.

Let us Take Care of our Hearts……for fear that it should not stop …
... then a heart shaped wreath will be placed on our chests.

Puzzle to Clues on What Health Means to Me

In essence, my measurement on my health status is on how my body and mind is able to rise to meet challenges and to sail through it all coming out a satisfied victor. Between the missing texts are clues for the cross-word puzzle on what I think health means to me.
Lub-dub, lub-dub! Yes, that’s the beat of a normal heart. BP check! Pulse check! Good to note that __(1)__ signs are at optimum, thanks to regular work-outs and __(2)__. Stretching, being able to touch the toes without effort, that’s being __(3)__. To maintain the desired waist circumference to hip ratio, not obese with a healthy body __(4)__ index within range; staying away from the silent killers, obesity, heart diseases, stroke, __(5)__ and cancer that’s a sign of good __(6)__ of life.
The ability to handle __(7)__ without getting overwhelmed and not hearing voices in your head, shows that you are mentally __(8)__. Not living in the past, all slumped and gloomy that’s a sign that you are keeping __(9)__ at bay. Mental health also means the ability to recognise annoyance and controlling anger before it becomes a full-fledged __(10)__. A person with balanced mental health accepts each and everyone as an equal without __(11)__. To __(12)__, is also a sign that the person is mentally able to put thoughts across verbally.
A person with a healthy system will confidently say, bring on those nuts, as there are no __(13)__, bring in the milk as there is no __(14)__ issues with me! A health conscious person will maintain good __(15)__ habits by managing meals proportionately. Puff-puff! Cough-cough! I don’t want any __(16)__, give that to the Malboro man. No metformin, no statin, no amilodipine, no long term __(17)__! With all this taken care of, how not to call it a day with regular, uninterrupted __(18)__?
